Common Considerations

When selecting LED lighting for your gymnasium or indoor sports courts, consider lighting requirements for both athlete and spectator visibility. In addition, long-term energy savings and cost reduction is often a benefit of LED lighting when compared to traditional HID or fluorescent lighting. It’s essential to evaluate factors like wattage and lumen output, light uniformity, glare, LED lifespan and ongoing maintenance costs. Additionally, consider motion sensors or bluetooth network controls for your new lighting system in order to maximize energy efficiency. Network lighting controls gives you additional energy savings functionality such as occupancy or motion sensing, dimming, scheduling, daylight harvesting, and more.

Why Gymnasium Lighting Matters

Gymnasiums are versatile spaces used for a variety of activities, from intense sports competitions to community events. Proper lighting is crucial in these environments for several reasons:

1.  Enhanced Visibility: High-quality lighting ensures that every corner of the gymnasium is well-lit, reducing shadows and glare. This is essential

for both athletes who need clear visibility to perform their best and spectators who want to enjoy the action without visual strain.
2.  Safety and Comfort: Adequate lighting improves safety by minimizing the risk of accidents and injuries. Bright, even lighting helps in preventing

mishaps during sports and recreational activities.
3.  Energy Efficiency: Modern gymnasium lighting solutions, particularly LED lights, offer significant energy savings. They consume less power

compared to traditional lighting systems, leading to lower operational costs.
4.  Durability and Longevity: Gymnasium lighting needs to be robust to withstand impacts from balls and equipment. Our LED gymnasium lights

are designed for durability, ensuring they last longer and require minimal maintenance.

LED Gymnasium Lighting Upgrade

Upgrade your gymnasium with our advanced lighting solutions and experience the difference in performance, safety, and energy efficiency. Explore our range of gymnasium lighting options and find the perfect fit for your facility.

Mounting Height

Mounting height is critical in planning your gymnasium or indoor sports court lighting; higher ceilings require more powerful lights with higher wattage and lumen output, while lower ceilings might benefit from lights with broader dispersion or a wider beam angle. Properly assessing the mounting height and beam angle of your new LEDs will help achieve uniform light distribution, minimizing dark spots and glare.

Retrofit or New Fixtures

Consider retrofitting existing fixtures with LED lamp technology as a cost-effective solution that minimizes disruption and make the upgrade to LED as simple as "changing light bulbs". Whether replacing metal halide, high pressure sodium or fluorescent T5 lamps, a LED lamp retrofit is often the fastest and easiest way to upgrade your inefficient, legacy lighting systems to LED. Our LED lamp technology is engineered to be either ballast compatible (works with your existing ballast), ballast bypass (works on direct line voltage 120-277V), or hybrid (works both with your ballast AND on direct line voltage).  Review our LED Retrofit Guide to further explore these options. Sometimes, however, investing in new LED fixtures may be a good option for maximizing energy efficiency and performance with the latest technology.

Network Lighting Controls

Incorporating network lighting controls allows for centralized management of your lighting system, enabling you to adjust settings based on operating schedules and time of day, motion sensors a.k.a. occupancy sensors, zone grouping and controls, dimming, and other factors to maximize energy savings. This technology not only reduces costs but also enhances the adaptability of your lighting system to meet changing needs. Many network lighting control systems operating on a Bluetooth mesh network, eliminating cumbersome rewiring thus making implementation fast and simple.

Gymnasium LED Lighting Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The recommended lighting levels for a gymnasium ranges from 30 footcandles for a elementary school gymnasium upto 125 footcandles for a professional sports court or Division 1 College gymnasium. See our footcandle lighting guide for further information.

Absolutely! We carry a variety of mogul base LED lamps and LED T5 lamps that are designed to replace traditional metal halide, high pressure sodium, and fluorescent T5 lamps. The benefit of a LED bulb is that it makes your upgrade to LED as simple as "changing a light bulb".

Replacing your existing metal halide, high pressure sodium, or T5 fluorescent bulbs with LEDs is often the fastest and simplest way to upgrade to energy efficient, LED lighting. However, for those who desire an entirely new look, then replacing your existing fixtures with new, integrated LED luminaires is a good option. Our team is happy to review your needs and offer suggestions and options for your lighting upgrade.

This depends on many factors, such mounting height, fixture spacing, light beam angle, and desired light levels (footcandles). For gymnasium lighing applications, we generally recommend evenly space LED lamps or luminaires that provide at least 20,000 lumens when mounted at 20' to 25' in order to achieve 50 footcandles or more. Of course, lumen requirements will adjust upward or downward depending spacing and mounting height. Our team is happy to provide a photometric plan, which will show you exactly how many fixtures you need for your space in order to achieve a desired light level.

While this is personal preference, the best color temperature for gymnasium lighting is 5000K which provides a clean white light. This helps improve visibility for both athletes and spectators while reducing eyestrain.
